I really do hate this place. OK, I’ve only seen the strip, but it is a truely wretched place. If aliens landed and thought this place was a true representation of the human race, they would wipe us out in an instant. If there is such a place as hell on earth, I think I’ve found it!
I have one more thing to do before I leave here, and I hope it redeems the whole Las Vegas visit. I’ll write about that later tonight provided I pull it off.

Las Vegas is a wondrous place which would not exist at all were it not for human ingenuity. Those of you bashing my city have not taken time to appreciate it for what it is, an oasis in the desert. Yes, we have ignorant fools here, but there are plenty of decent hardworking folks too. We have entertainment for all types of individuals. We are a resort town. One of the few, actually, where someone can ski down a mountain in the morning and then go water skiing on Lake Mead in the afternoon. Eight to nine months out of the year the weather is perfect. I think many of you are bitter because you had unreasonable expectations of Vegas and/or lost.
I hate Vegas from a parental point of view. The schools are horrible! Over crowded, low test scores, no adequate after school programs. My son is in 4th grade and receives only 1 page of homework! I went out and purchased a workbook for him just to keep him afloat. Yesterday, I hear on the news Clark County is cuts Kindergarten-it’s already a 2.5 hr program! My husband(military guy) understand that my children and I have to leave-6 more mths and I’m going home. It’s unfortunate-I feel sorry so sorry for the kids.

I’ve lived in Las Vegas for 14 years. Loved it for the first 3 years. Since then I’ve hated it. Husband was born and raised here. He’s the asshole who won’t move. I truly hate him for it. I’ve decided to get a job, find a place to leave and hopfully leave his ass here.

No place for children, fitness or healthy people. Bare parks, bowling centers and theaters are only located in smoke filled casinos. Children’s play areas are in these same unhealthy enviornments. Any monitary proceeds from tourists go into the casinos not education. Locals consist of drunken gamblers with a few who work. This is no place for sane intelligent human beings. Save yourselves and get out as soon as you can. It is the most unsafe and unhealthiest city on the planet. We have been here 2 years and have had enough. Leaving this weekend… Yippppeeee…

I’ve never been to Las Vegas but I am planning a 4 days trip, but I already know that I will never live there. Even If I never went there, it is obvious this place has no soul. I guess some people may like it, but definitely not for everyone.
By the way Kelly, you’ve been yelling for one year and a half now, that you hate Las Vegas and that’s the worst place on the planet, it’s about time you leave this place, don’t you think??? It’s not so hard to move to another city. It’s kind of pathetic to complain for that long without doing anything to change your life.

I have to disagree with some of the haters here. I don’t know if I’d want to live in Las Vegas (the idea tempts me occasionally), but I absolutely love to visit from Iowa. I’ve been there several times since 1997, and most recently spent my two-week honeymoon at Stratosphere in October. I, and now my wife also, never run out of exciting things to see and do in Vegas. From the overwhelming
glittering-green MGM Grand (the first casino I ever stepped foot into), to the sumptuous breakfast buffet inside Luxor, to the medieval dinner show inside Excalibur, to the roller coaster twisting through New York New York, to the upscale window shopping inside Planet Hollywood, to the dancing fountains outside Bellagio, to the flame-throwing animated statues inside Caesars Palace, to the erupting volcano outside Mirage, to the gondola rides floating through Venetian, to the sultry siren show outside TI, to the models strutting inside Fashion Show Mall, to the sky-high rides atop Stratosphere, to the dazzling light shows over Fremont Street, to the contrasting peacefulness and natural desert beauty of Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire, wow! I’m amazed that anyone could fail to find something enchanting about this amazingly unbelievable world of sensory overload filled with scantily-clad coctail waitresses, celebrity impersonators, and sexy showgirls. And sometimes, I even walk away with a profit from the countless craps tables. My wife and I can’t wait to get back to Las Vegas for our next visit. If you’ve never been, make sure to bring a camera, for you won’t believe it was anything but a garishly magnificent dream upon returning home.

Hmm…gourmet dining…you mean like the Alex continental cuisine inside Wynn Las Vegas, the Alize French cuisine inside Palms Casino, the Aureole American cuisine inside Mandalay Bay, the Sinatra Italian cuisine inside Encore Las Vegas…need I go on?
You had been waxing poetic about the schlocky likes of the Excalibur, etc. The fare you now mention is just overpriced, under-delivered, “me too” designer eats. You can probably get a better meal, at a fraction of the price, back home in Iowa. And don’t let the paid-for restaurant reviews of these Vegas places fool anyone. It’s all a game to hoodwink the crass tourists. Slap a foreign-sounding name on a place, pay a celebrity chef to show up once a month so you can claim it’s “his” kitchen, and then print preposterously high prices in very fine print on the menu (rounding up to the nearest ten dollars) — they all follow the same, phony game-plan.
Enjoy it if you please. But I see that the majority of posters on this thread are clear-eyed and aren’t going to bite.

– probably, your spot is the only spot you have ever experienced… get out and learn a bit more about other cultures and about respecting dignity and humanity.
this is my view of Vegas based on two trips there:
– people there are just plain ignorant
– people that work there are racists
– it is a place where all things immoral is cashed upon
– degrades humanity
i hope this horrid place and its horrid people will soon become a ghost town and die. The country will be better without it. Anyone who feels otherwize is ignorant.

As a tourist, obviously that would enchant you. But speaking as a resident who has lived in this hell hole for almost 7 years now, that crap gets old. And aside from that, Las Vegas has no culture. The support for the arts here really sucks. There’s no major art/cultural scene going on here that’s on part with the ones at Los Angeles, San Fransisco, New York, Milan, Paris, etc. it’s all very small and scat tared and so un-supported. I find that quite ironic since so many people here complain about there being no thriving cultural center yet they do nothing to help it thrive. Having First Friday art events once a month isn’t enough to keep it going; Las Vegas needs more than an occasional Andrea Boccelli concert to attract classical music lovers; support for local orchestras, ballets and whatnot is almost absent amongst the younger generation. It’s like this city has given on up anything but the post-modern kitsch crap like show girls and all that gawdy awful glitz and stripper glam.
If any aspiring filmmaker wants to create a postmodern cyberpunk film a la Bladerunner, Las Vegas is the perfect city to do it. This place is great for setting that depressing, dismal tone that postmodern cyberpunk has to offer. I mean seriously, Las Vegas BREATHES postmodernism. Everything here is so kitsch and hipster and handled with such nonchalance and fake enthusiasm at the same time…it’s so depressing. Think of it being the lovechild of Bladerunner and Brave New World.
Not only that, but being educated here is so awful. Clark County School District is just crap and only has no more than 10 really good high schools. And don’t even bother getting higher ed here; UNLV is 99th tier college education. It is god awful to even deal with the financial aid staff because they are such bitches and only care about your money. A ton of mediocre professors as well; some even come to class drunk. They don’t care about your grades or helping you pass…all the good professors already left due to their departments being cut. UNLV is cutting out several departments such as Philosophy, Women’s Studies, Photography…they almost threatened to cut out Social Work, but good thing they didn’t. That would have been stupid of them since social workers are terribly needed in this hell hole city that holds a ton of crazies due to all the depression that gambling, drinking, etc. causes. The business and law schools used to be great but are now going downhill…really, the only thing good that UNLV has to offer are their Nursing and obviously their Hotel/Hospitality Management programs. I’m not surprised that Nevada is 49th place in education.

Seriously, the only reason why one should stay at UNLV is if they can’t afford to go to college anywhere else. So now this whole tuition hike is pissing off many students here who are struggling to even find something better to do with their lives than just work as cocktail waitresses or park BMWs for gamblers for the rest of their lives. But noooo, our stupid governor wants to cut down on education and force us to work miserable, meaningless, kitsch jobs for the rest of our lives!
Bah. But then again, what to expect from a city that was built and ran by a mob in the first place? Now they even have a “Mob Museum” up and running at the Tropicana.
Might I also add that Downtown Las Vegas really, really sucks? My high school is located there, and only in Vegas can you find an old crack house right across from the high school dance building…except now that the crack house blew up from all that crazy experimenting going on in the meth lab. Talk about a dismal location. The rest of downtown looks dismal and downright creepy as well with all the old houses and their windows being sealed up by wood…I sometimes wonder if someone even lives in these buildings, and if so, what kind of scary people live in them. Not ideally a good place to send your kids to school there, but I had no choice as I would have rather chosen Las Vegas Academy over my zoned school since the Academy’s quality of education is x9000 times better. Seriously, Downtown Vegas is the worst of all the downtown places I’ve been to. It can’t even call itself downtown with all these homeless people running around and all the old hotels looking so sad and abandoned due to the uptown, overcrowded mega-hotels strip area stealing its customers. Businesses rarely thrive here and only its tiny community of caring artists are desperately trying to keep downtown alive with First Friday and all that jazz. There’s no way that downtown Vegas is on par with the likes of downtown San Diego, downtown San Fransisco, etc. Overall, I’d say that Vegas is a 2nd-tier city, or even worse than that. 99th tier in everything! I can’t wait to move out of this city once I’m done with my remaining semesters of the “college” pit called “University of Never Leaving Vegas”.

Out out the 1 thing I can think of what is good about this place, came with 100’s of things I hate.
Las Vegas living is for thick-skinned heartless scums and those that can stand them, they thrive here everyday.
