Scheduler Enhancements in 11g…

The latest article in my OCP revision notes has surfaced:

The detached and lightweight jobs look fine, but I’m not totally happy with the remote external jobs. I don’t think they quite live up to their promise, and they seem like a security issue waiting to happen. I assume Oracle don’t expect you to use remote external jobs if you have grid control, or you will end up with a couple of agents on some servers. 🙂

Quite a glaring omission is the lack of integration of the new features into Enterprise Manager. For many people, if it’s not in Enterprise Manager, it doesn’t exist.

I’m hoping a few loose ends will get tied up in 11g Release 2.

Automatic Memory Management in 11g…

I’m still trying to work my way through the 11g new features for the OCP upgrade exam. I’ve had so much going on recently that I’m still only about 2/3 of the way through the syllabus. Here’s the latest installment.

Automatic Memory Management in Oracle Database 11g Release 1

I guess I need to write about 10 more articles before I’ll have covered the syllabus. I’m hoping to complete them and sit the exam before I go to OpenWorld, but if things keep going like they are at the moment that might be a struggle.

Fedora 9 and Oracle 11g…

I wrote a couple of articles against a beta version of Fedora 9 before I went on holiday. I did a run through against the final release of Fedora 9 today and they seem fine, so here they are:

The installation process doesn’t give you the option to turn off SELinux or the firewall. You can do it after the installation, so it’s just a small annoyance, but I don’t like it.

If you want to know my opinions on the distribution itself, read my post on Fedora 8. It’s six months later and there is still no visible sign of a direction for this distribution. I don’t think my opinion has changed.
