Postby hermannov » Wed Feb 20, 2013 1:19 pm

Hi Tim,

I have serious issues with this error : ORA-29275: partial multibyte character.
My system is crashing regularly because of it and end-user can not understand.

How can i come over this issue.
Oracle 11gr2 (64 bits) on Redhat 5.
character set : AL32UTF8,
most of columns are varchar2(100) or varchar2(200).

Thanks.

Hi.

You should probably start by checking this MOS note [788156.1]/

https://support.oracle.com/epmos/faces/ ... d=788156.1

Cheers

Hi.

The link works fine. You will need to log in using your MOS account for it to display. Just like any other MOS note.

Cheers

Hi Tim,

This error is still a problem for me.
Please can you be more clear on that.
I recently found that by changing the NLS_LANG parameter the problem where solved.
(NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.AL32UTF8)
But it was only for a client tool (ODI 10g).
Whereas on TOAD/SQL Developer or command line, I still have it.
I can not fetch all the rows, the error will appear.

Please help.

Hi.

You have a few choices:

1) You write a script that includes setting the environment variable and starting the applications (TOAD, SQL Developer etc.). This makes sure the NLS_LANG setting is set correctly.

2) You add the environment variable setting to your system. (Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Environment Variables, then click the NEW button.)

3) You add the value into your registry under the relevant Oracle Home.

Either one of these three methods will set the NLS_LANG environment variable, so it is set correctly when your application starts, which by what you've already said, fixes your issue.

Cheers

Thanks Tim,

It works, but especially when I set the system variables.
I don't know why with the registry, only some tools work while others do not work.

Many thanks.

Hi.

I guess it depends on whether they actually interrogate the registry properly. :)
