Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c on Exadata

Postby ssadoglu » Tue Jun 18, 2013 9:58 am

Hi Tim,

How do I install Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 2 on Exadata Compute Node? is there any MOS note related install? I've been looking PATCH readme. But it's not very clear. Can you please say critical points to installation to me?

Thanks in advance for you all pointers.

Hi.

You don't!

You install Cloud Control on a separate server. It is a monitoring tool You shouldn't be installing a monitoring tool on a server you are trying to monitor. You can see how to install it here:

http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/12c ... -and-6.php

Once you've installed cloud control on your separate server, you just push agents to each of the compute nodes on the Exadata system. You can see how to do this here:

http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/12c ... -tasks.php

Cheers

Hi.

1 - is there any setup difference between RedHat Enterprise Linux and OEL ? e.g required software packages , kernel parameters or database initialization parameters.
2 - How to calculate optimal values for pga_aggregate_target,shared_pool_size,sga_target ? So is there any formula? BTW ,I've been using PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET = (total physical RAM * 80%) * 20% , is it true?

3 - How to configure parameter settings in the /opt/oracle.SupportTools/onecommand/em.param file for Exadata? is there any sample file?

Thanks in advance.

Hi.

1) They are the same OS, with Oracle Linux having a few nice extra bits.

- Required packages: The same, but you can get most of your prerequisites done by installing "oracle-validated" on OL5 or "oracle-rdbms-server-11gR2-preinstall" on OL6.
- Kernel Parameters: The same.
- DB parameters: The same.

2) Use the memory advisors, which are actually pretty good.

Alternatively, if you are not sure what to use I would suggest turning on AMM for a short while and seeing what settings it decides. Once you know the basic spread, turn off AMM and switch back to ASMM, which is backed by hugepages.

3) Never used Exadata. Don't know anything about it.

Cheers

Hi Tim.

Thanks so much. I have the last question. Now , I'm running the following command on the exadata compute node. I'm really confused. What should I do for <em_user> and <em_base> ?

<em_user> -- > sysman user ?
<em_base> -- > /u01/app/oracle/ or /u01/app/oracle/oms12cr2 or /u01/app/oracle/agent12cr2 ?
What do you recommended?

Readme :
em_user is the operating system user who owns Oracle Management Server, em_user is also the
Oracle WebLogic Server admin user and em_base is the directory to be used for installing the Oracle Management Server
and Management agent home. The operating system user must exist and belong to the oinstall and dba groups.

# (sh setupem.sh -emOnly -emUser <em_user> -emBase <em_base> | tee /tmp/setupem.log) 3>&1 1>&2 2>&3 | tee /tmp/setupem.err

Thanks.

Hi.

It looks like you are trying to install the Oracle Management Server on the Exadata machine itself. You *really* shouldn't be doing that! It is not the right place for it.

PLEASE get advice from someone before continuing as I believe you are making a really BIG mistake!

As far as I'm aware, the whole Cloud Control installation should be done on a complete different machine that is nothing to do with Exadata. Once your cloud control installation is complete, you can then use it to push the agents out to the exadata machine.

So that means you will not be running an installer on the Exadata boxes.

Cheers

Hi.

I've sent a "reach out" mail to a few of the guys on the OakTable who are Exadata gurus to check my understanding of the situation, but I would be very surprised if any of them have ever installed the management server on an Exadata compute node. I'll feed back the answers from that email when I get them.

Cheers

Hi.

I got a whole slew of emails and all say the same as me. Do not install cloud control on the Exadata server!

Get a separate box, or preferable a VM to provide failover and snapshots, and install the whole of Cloud Control on that so it is a separate entity from everything else it is monitoring.

Cheers
