RMAN 9i Parameter Issue

Postby dnunknown » Tue Jun 18, 2013 6:46 pm

Hi Tim,

9.2.0.8

Having an issue w/ this version, we have a standard script that restores our DB's (10/11g) that has this in the run statement after the controlfile restore

Code: Select all

RUN {
CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 4;
SET UNTIL TIME "TO_DATE('Jun 17 2013 16:48:23','Mon dd yyyy hh24:mi:ss')";
restore database;
recover database;
}

When running it in a 9i DB I get error;

Code: Select all

Finished restore at 18-JUN-13 <-- controlfile

database mounted

RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-03002: failure of configure command at 06/18/2013 12:14:44
ORA-01649: operation not allowed with a backup controlfile

Recovery Manager complete.

Odd thing is if I remove;

Code: Select all

CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 4;

To have this execute;

Code: Select all

RUN {
SET UNTIL TIME "TO_DATE('Jun 17 2013 16:48:23','Mon dd yyyy hh24:mi:ss')";
restore database;
recover database;
}

It will run w/o an issue

From what I can see this is a valid parameter for 9i;
http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/9i/recovery-manager-enhancements-9i.php

This is my current config;

Code: Select all

RMAN configuration parameters are:
CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 3 DAYS;
CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION OFF; # default
CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '<location>/%F';
CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 1;
CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default
CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '<location>/snapcf_<sid>.f'; # default

What am I missing here?

Thanks,
Steve

Hi.

You are missing the bit where you read the error message. :)

ORA-01649: operation not allowed with a backup controlfile

It doesn't say you have a syntax issue. It says you can;t do it when you are using a backup controlfile. If you tried it with a regular controlfile it would work.

Cheers

Well that just seems odd :?:
We have the control file being backed up via;

Code: Select all

CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '<location>';

and in 10g/11g we are running the restore controlfile as this;

Code: Select all

startup nomount;
set dbid=<nnn>;
restore controlfile from
'<location>/<file>';

I am then able to run the SET DISK PARA..... in the RUN{} block w/o issue
Only in 9i when I run the same steps will it give me that error

Hi.

Why is this odd? Did you expect nothing to change between versions?

You have a workaround. Don't use parallel and it works.

Guess I will have to go w/ that or get old vendor code up to date so it will support an 11g DB :D
