One of interviewer has asked me :
one database AA has 2TB size and other database BB is 200GB size and both database version is same 10.2.0 and we want upgrade to version 11.2.0. Then both databases upgrade will same time or Database AA(2TB size ) will take more time?
My answer was: will take same time because catupgrade.sql will create/modify the data dictionary view. But interviewer look like not satisfy with me. he asked three times are you sure......????
2.) if we copy all the files (redo,control,data,password... files) from 10.2.0 to oracle version 11.2.0. with new spfile. when will bring up the database then database will come up or not from 11.2.0 version? it not then why? what is procedure to upgrade the database from this methods???
Please help me?
1) I believe you are essentially correct. If is only in version updates that modify the table blocks, like Oracle 7 - Oracle 8 where the ROWID format changed, that the size of the database matters. It's possible if one database had more objects, it would have more metadata in the data dictionary and that would affect the upgrade time, but for the most part, upgrade time is not affected by database size.
3) The database will start and it will not be a proper 11.2 database as it has not been upgraded, but I would not count on it functioning properly. The Oracle binaries would be trying to function with an Oracle 11.2 database, but the database would be 10.2. The manual upgrade is outlined here:
