Maker - Checker Issue need a suggestion

Postby mdsirajoddin » Thu Jan 02, 2014 10:04 am

Hi Tim,

Hope every thing is going fine with you..

Here I got a requirement : Maker - Checker option

MY DB Details:

Code: Select all

Oracle Database 10g Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production
PL/SQL Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production
CORE    10.2.0.1.0      Production
TNS for 32-bit Windows: Version 10.2.0.1.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 10.2.0.1.0 - Production

Front-end : Oracle forms and Reports 6i

I need a suggestion..

There is an application already developed, now they need an enhancement of Maker-Checker policy. It means one (Maker) should initiate an issue, and another (Checker) should approve it. After Checker approval only it will be available for all other users to see the values. Before there was not Checker option, they were working directly.

For this Need to add one column to table or to draw a new table for the same. In Oracle Applications, there is an option like "Workflows" available to handle these type of issues. So, Is there any such option to handle directly from Backend or I need to write any Pl/SQL Code / or to handlr from front-end itself..

Thanks in Advance,

Mdsirajoddin

Dear Tim,

The Concept :
"The maker-checker principle states that important tasks should be completed by two people, not just one, to reduce the risk of errors and misuse. One person initiates the process, and the other person completes it. In practice, some higher-risk processes require a third person acting as a checker". Mean there should be one initiater and one approver.

I have an application already developed. Now I need to implement this concept.

So I want to alter the table by adding a column named "Status". When the maker initializes one content, the status will become "P" --> Pending, when Approver approves the same, status column will be updated to "A" --> Approved.

When the Approver opens the front-end application, the application will list all the Status "P" elements. When the approver - approve, the status will be update as "A".

Is this approach what i am expecting right or wrong.. I need an Advice...

Thanks in Advance
Mohd Sirajoddin.

Hi.

Well, that sounds like it would work, but I can't really comment too much as I have no idea about the application or the full user requirement. What you've said will work for the outline of the requirement you've stated.

Before I tried to implement something, I would be asking lots of questions about the scope of this, like:

- Is this going to be on one table or lots of tables.
- Will the number of steps in the workflow change over time.
- Will the number of steps very depending on the type of workflow.
- Is there any emergency situation where the workflow can be ignored.
- Is the application enforcing the workflow, or is this just a flag to help identify records?

That sort of thing. Based on the questions you ask and the feedback, you will start to build a picture of the requirement, which will in turn lead to making the decision on the correct implementation.

Cheers

Hi Tim,

Thanks for your suggestion & valuable time..

Its not based on a Flag Concept. i.e., The DB should not retrive the pending records if other end users query them even. Front end is Oracle Forms & Reports, it will show all the results for queries, hope it will restrict if I modify the conditions on Front End Application.

here we are using more than a table, cause in specific issues - we need specific approvals. - Approver is only one person and Initiator also only one person.

Until the Status updated, it should not show anything to other end users. If it's rejected by the checker, it should return to the Initiator (Maker). Here only I am strucking, is it possible through one table or I need to create a table for initiator and it should be inserted to the main table - after the approval only the same should be inserted in the Main table..

needed an advice..

Thanks in Advance..

Hi.

Like I said, I don't really understand the requirement, so I'm not really in a position to comment on the implementation. Have you discussed this with the other members of your team?

Cheers
