Which certification to take 8i or 9i?

Postby Guest » Mon Nov 01, 2004 6:09 pm

I have 5 years experience in oracle and working for 3 years as a junior DBA. I would like to get certified and don't know at this point whether to pursue 8i or 9i dba certification. My concern is mainly which version of oracle would land me more job opportunities now.

Hi.

There are benefits to both tracks. Here are some things you should consider:

8i Pros:
- If you are currently working with 8i alot then the 8i OCP track will be more in line with your currentl needs.
- Doing the 8i track means you don't have to do the Oracle University course which is a requirement of the 9i track.
- If you are 8i certified you can upgrade to 9i with a single exam and no need for the OU course.

8i Cons:
- The 8i track is made up of 5 exams. Giving a total of 6 exams to get certified in 9i via this route.
- Every month the usage of 8i is decreasing so it's less of a requirement for jobs.

9i Pros:
- Only 4 exams to get certified.
- It's going to be around for some time.

9i Cons:
- There is a requirement to do an Oracle University course to get the OCP. Depending on the course you pick and your country this can cost between £700-£2000.
- If you work alot with 8i, or are looking for jobs where they still use 8i alot then the lack of 8i OCP may affect you.

There is no right or wrong answer. The choice depends on your circumstances and your cashflow.

Cheers

Tim, thanks a lot for your insight. I decided to take the 8i route.

I recieved all the materials i need to pass the ORACLE 8i DBA track on ebay. You are able to purchase a training kit which covers all of the exams to the 9i upgrade for a very cheap price relative to other self study and hands on training. Materials such as STS software, CBTs, ILTs and other training materials were very helpful in my certification process.

look at this link for an example of what is available:
