Oracle shadow process Oracle.exe(SHAD) process increasing

Postby bharat.gundubilli » Thu Sep 12, 2013 2:08 pm

In my test database Oracle Shadow Process (Oracle.exe (SHAD)) increases exponentially due to this we are getting max Process reached hence we are unable to connect database remotely.

Operation System Version Oracle Version
Windows Server 2003 10.2.0.3

We didn’t find any clue in the alert log and we are unable to kill the shadow process session at os level.

SQL>Select DISTINCT SPID,Program from V$process;
8880 Oracle.exe(SHAD)
2234 Oracle.exe(SHAD
……
…..
1173 rows selected

SQL>Host taskkill /pid 8880 /pid 2234

Processes with Pid 8880 and 2234 are not existed.

Kindly help us to avoid this.

Many Thanks in advance,

Hi.

I don't run Oracle on Windows very often, so I'm not the best person to comment on this...

The shadow processes are a normal part of Oracle connections. When a person creates a new dedicated connection a shadow process is spawned to handle that connection. When they disconnect, the shadow process should die. You need to check if you are having problems with Dead Connection Detection (DCD), which is a problem on some versions of Oracle on Windows. There are a number of MOS notes on this, including this one.

If you have extremely large numbers of users, you should probably consider using Shared Server (formally know as Multi Threaded Server) for your connections, rather than dedicated connections.

Cheers
