Guidance on Oracle DBA job - Fresher

Postby kkrish » Thu Jan 15, 2009 1:26 am

hi,
I am a recent college graduate with major in computer science. My interest towards my career is to become an Oracle DBA. I do not have any experience in database. Even the junior oracle dba requires 2 - 3 years of experience. Will a OCA in 11g will be helpful for a fresher like me.

Cheers,
krish

Hi.

Both OCA and OCP will be helpful as they will provide a syllabus and framework for the process of learning Oracle. Will they get you a job? Not on their own, but they do show an employer you are willing to make the effort.

I suggest that as well as certification, you contact some companies that work with Oracle and offer to work for free to get some experience. If you prove yourself they may give you a job. Even if they don't, you will have some real world experience for your CV. My first 4 months of work were for free when I started. :)

Cheers

hi tim,

At present i m working as a DBA in a manufacturing industry, we are using oracle10g but the thing is being DBA fresher, here i can't learn anything, :( becoz there is no much dba activity over here.
currently i have only 2months of experience,
in my place many MNC companies are there, (i know all of them using oracle DB) but they r expecting people who have 3+ years of experience (yesterday i got an advertisement from one company expecting oracle DBA with 3+), so can i approach them to work for fee to get some experience. if i do so will they respect me!!!

i need your valuable suggestion.

Hi.

I can't tell you what other companies are likely to think because I have no idea what is going on in the peoples heads. :)

I think you should write a covering letter and send your CV to the companies to see how they respond. What's the worst that can happen?

Cheers

Hi.

I have no idea. It totally depends on the company. It might be doing everything. I might be just checking backups have run successfully. Impossible to say what they will expect of you.

Cheers

Tim, any advice on creating the cv to show off our skills?

The fat burning furnace works pretty well in my opinion.

Hi.

The first page of my CV is just about my skills. More or less a list of things I can do with an indication of my level of experience in them. That way someone can quickly see if I am right for the job or not. No point them reading about your favorite ice cream flavour if you are not the person for them. I also have contact details on it so if they lose everything but the front page, I still stand a chance. :)

The next thing I do is list job experience. I put a small paragraph about each job and the technology I used there. If you've not worked for many companies, you may prefer to list each project separately, to show you have a range of skills.

Last is the education, certification, awards etc. Some companies love this stuff. Some don't care, so this isn't of prime importance to me. You want to hit them hard with the stuff that matters, so the first page should have all the important stuff.

Cheers
