oraclelib install issue on OVM VirtualBox

Postby tiger01 » Tue Feb 28, 2012 2:19 am

Hi Tim,

I have followed your instructions of "Oracle Database 11g Release 2 RAC On Linux Using VirtualBox", trying to setup a 2 node 11g rac. My host is Suse10, and I was able to install and create a Oracle VM VirutalBox4.1.8 called "rac2", where I installed OEL5.5. Since my VB rac2 was not able to access the internet, so I downloaded oracleasmlib-2.0.4-1.el5.x86_64.rpm from OTN to my host. The problem I ran into is that I can't seem to access the rpm from rac2.

What I have tried was to make a shared folder on my host: 1) copy the "oracleasmlib-2.0.4-1.el5.x86_64.rpm" file to /home/tiger01/Downloads, and 2) execute the command: VBoxManage sharedfolder add "rac2" --name "rac2share" --hostpath "/home/tiger01/Downloads", which returned without errors. Now move to the VB (rac2)...As root, I created a directory /share, then ran the command: mount -t vboxsf rac2share /share, which returned error as "mount.vboxsf: mounting failed with the error: Protocol error".

Can you please help?

Thanks...

Hi.

You are talking specifically about rac2, but you have not mentioned rac1. Questions:

- Do you have a rac1 VM?
- Does your rac1 Vm connect to the Internet and your host OK?

If the answer to both those questions is yes, then it sounds like you've not configured your networking correctly on rac2, which is why you can not connect to the new or use shared folders etc. Without correct network configuration all communication between the VM and the host, or other VMs is impossible. This includes shared folders, pings, Internet etc. you must fix this before proceeding.

Cheers

Tim,
The answer to your first 2 questions is no. rac2 is the first Oracle VM I created and had OEL OS installed.

Network config is something I have trouble with. My host machine is connected to a router using an Ethernet port. So it has a valid IP and the host is able to connect to the internet. Can you point me to the right direction as well as provide some advice as how to config the network in the VB (rac2) environment?

Thanks,
Mike

Hi.

How bizarre. You start your config by defining the second RAC node. You are obviously not really following my instructions because:

1) I do not start with node 2.
2) I explain how to set the network up on the system. I too use an ethernet port connected to a router, so the only different you should see if if your subject is different to mine.

Post the ip address of you host system and I will give you the IP addresses you could use.

Also, I suggest you throw away what you've got so far and start again. If you don't know what you are doing and decide to follow an article to help you, you should really follow it untill you have learned the skills necessary to let you break away from it. Why complicate your life by not doing what I say in the article, then asking me for help. :)

Cheers

Hi Tim,

It does seem odd to start with rac2...In fact, rac2 is the first Oracle VM created on the SuSE system. A bit of history behind that was, when I first tried to build a virtual machine on the system, I used the "create virtual machine" built-in utility through YaST and named the Xen virtual machine as "rac1". Later on, I saw your excellent article online, so I decided to follow your guide -- to learn. When I installed Oracle VM VirtualBox, I used "rac2" instead of "rac1" as the first RAC node to avoid any naming conflicts from the Xen environment.

No offense here, but no attempts were made to "break away" from your fabulous article. I followed your instructions until the step to install the oracleasmlib*.rpm, that's when I found issues with the network configurations on the VB. As far as the host IP goes, it is 192.168.1.138...

Thanks for your help.

Hi.

If your host IP address is 192.168.1.138, then your public, VIP and SCAN addresses should all have the 192.168.2.x subnet. You might for instance use the following details for yout VMs.

Code: Select all

127.0.0.1       localhost.localdomain   localhost
# Public
192.168.1.111   ol6-112-rac1.localdomain        ol6-112-rac1
192.168.1.112   ol6-112-rac2.localdomain        ol6-112-rac2
# Private
192.168.0.111   ol6-112-rac1-priv.localdomain   ol6-112-rac1-priv
192.168.0.112   ol6-112-rac2-priv.localdomain   ol6-112-rac2-priv
# Virtual
192.168.1.113   ol6-112-rac1-vip.localdomain    ol6-112-rac1-vip
192.168.1.114   ol6-112-rac2-vip.localdomain    ol6-112-rac2-vip
# SCAN
192.168.1.115   ol6-112-scan.localdomain ol6-112-scan
192.168.1.116   ol6-112-scan.localdomain ol6-112-scan
192.168.1.117   ol6-112-scan.localdomain ol6-112-scan

The default gateway on your "eth0" adaptors should be set to "192.168.1.1".
The default gateway on your "eth1" adaptors should be left blank.
The DNS entries for your networks should be set to "192.168.1.1".

Remember, not of these IP addresses must already be in use on your network. If they are, you will need to pick different addresses, but maintain the subnet (the first 3 numbers 192.168.0.x)

If you have done this, I would expect your boxes to ping on the public and private addresses as described in the article.

Cheers
