Oracle Streams (Replication)

Postby adda.road@yahoo.com » Sat May 19, 2012 12:41 pm

Hi Tim,

For high availabity we use RAC and Data Gaurd.
Why should we use Oracle Streams?

Could you please explain me in detail.

Thank You,
Rampa.

Hi.

There is not reason for you to use streams. Is that detailed enough? :)

Streams is a change-data-capture system for replication. You are using RAC to protect against machine failures on your primary system. If a large enough problem happens, you can switch over to your standby system. You have no need for replication, so no need for streams.

Note. If you did need some form or replication, Oracle now prefer you to pay for GoldenGate, rather than use streams for free. :)

Cheers

Hi Tim,

Thank You for reply.

If Oracle Streams and Oracle Golden Gate both use for replication,

we can use Oracle's feature i.e Oracle Streams.

Why should oracle buy third party vendor Golden gate?

What are additional features of Golden Gate than Oracle Streams, other than supporting replication to Heterogenious Systems?

Thank You,
Rampa.

Hi.

Golden Gate is an Oracle product. They bought it a few years back.

Heterogeneous systems is a bit one for some people. It is supposedly easier to configure and manage than streams. There is nothing to stop you using streams. They are still supported, but will not get much development in future. For replication Golden Gate is the strategic product for Oracle.

Remember, replication is a specific thing. Data guard is still the preferred solution for standby databases.

Cheers
