same server two databases

Postby Ninadgarude » Wed Oct 03, 2012 9:40 am

Hi,

I have a windows 2008 server.

I already installled oracle software for oracle_home C:/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1 for database DEV.

Now, I want to create new database with different oracle_home on same server with oracle_home as C:/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_2 and SID as TEST.

Do I have to istall oracle software again ? if yes, what about inventoryfiles in C:\Program Files\Oracle\Inventory ? wont they be overwritten ?

Hi.

You can have two instances running from the same Oracle home, in which case you don't need a second installation.

If you really do want a separate ORACLE_HOME, then you do need to install the Oracle software again. This won't overwrite the inventory, it will add the new installation to it.

Cheers

Tim,

You know, I had put this question on various forums ... but this is the best and clear answer I got !!!

everybody else was just giving work arounds and telling me noto to do separate oracle homes and all without actually asking my requirements and restrictions.

Thank you so much again !!

One doubt, when I have two oracle homes , i will have two listener.ora and tnsnames files right ?

few people confusing me that u will have only 1 file.

Also, Can I have same port listening to both databases ?

Hi.

The choice of listener configuration is up to you.

If you want two listeners (one in each home), you can, but they must listen on different ports.

If you want a single listener you can. One listener can listen for all installations on the machine. Just remember, you should always use the listener for the newest version of the software installed. In your case, you will have two homes for the same version, so you can run the listener from either.

Cheers
