Restore SPFILE with / without DBID

Postby peterx » Sun Oct 28, 2012 10:46 am

hi Tim,

I what to ask is, when I restore the spfile from backup (FRA auto backup).
Many doc. said that i needed to

Code: Select all

RMAN> SET DBID <dbid>;

before restore.

But, i found that, and try many many times. I can

Code: Select all

startup nomount

RUN
{
  ALLOCATE CHANNEL c1 DEVICE type disk;
  RESTORE SPFILE TO PFILE 'my_path'
  FROM 'o1_mf_nnsnf_TAG20121025T213913_88lj81sv_.bkp';
  SHUTDOWN ABORT;
}

restore the pfile without set dbid.

I am confused about, why and can I omit the "set DBID" ?

thanks.

Hi.

Are you sure you are not thinking about restoring the controlfile autobackup?

Cheers

hi Tim,

Yes, i never restoring from the autobackup!

What is the benefit using restore from autobackup?
--> Oracle will find the latest and validate database match with the spfile and controlfile ?

I always restore spfile from my autobackup file like -> /u02/flash_recovery_area/MYSID/autobackup/c-DBID-20121027-02

I guess, because i use the file format = c-DBID-20121027-02,
Oracle will get my DBID , and never ask me, right ?

thanks.

Hi.

There is no advantage to restoring from an autobackup, as opposed to a manual backup. The real issue here is that people used to forget to backup their controlfiles and spfile, leaving them at risk. Forcing the autobackups makes you a lot safer.

Yes, if you specify a particular backup, then the DBID is implied.
