Device checks for ASM with shared disks on Virtual Box.

Postby vjunior1981 » Fri Aug 16, 2013 3:30 pm

Hi Tim.
First of all, sorry for my pour english.
I'm a big fan, and I had the pleasure of meeting you personally in Brazil, in the GUOB event.
I was following your tutorial for installing Oracle RAC 12c.
My question is why the shared disks fail with the 'Device checks for ASM', when using shared disks on virtual box?
Is there another way to simulate without this error from occurring? Maybe using freenas or openfiler?
Thanks!

Best Regards
Vitor Jr.

Hi.

Cool. It's nice to hear back from people I've met at events. :)

Regarding the question, I'm not actually sure why the shared disk check fails. I don't know what exactly the test involves. Don't let that put you off though. It does not affect the way the RAC works, so it is totally fine to carry on.

As for ways to get round this. I suspect any of the following will work:

- Use something like OpenFiler to create iSCSI targets, then use the Linux RAC nodes as iSCSI initiators.
- Use a third node as an iSCSI target, then use the Linux RAC nodes as iSCSI initiators.

- Use a third node as an NFS server, then use NFS to present the shared disks. With this method you can choose to use ASM or not.

Cheers
