8i and ASP

Postby Guest » Mon Nov 01, 2004 6:09 pm

I hate to sound stupid here but HELP. I am a web developer who has been maintaining a website using ASP and an Access db to dynamically build pages. (The server is IIS on NT.)

I have been told I am to move from the Access db to our new Oracle 8i db sitting on our IBM RISC boxes (I think running AIX).

I've found stuff online about using ASP to connect to an Oracle db but can't find anything matching what I am trying to do.

When I asked our application developers about using ASP to access the Oracle db, they said that with 8i only the Oracle Forms Builder (Java) and the Oracle App Server will work for connecting to the Oracle db.

Is this true? (I've never done anything in Oracle before..)

HELP!!!

Hi.

No, they are not correct. My guess is they misunderstood your question. I've worked on ASP projects connecting to 8i, 9i and 10g and they are fine. You need to do the following:

- Load the Oracle client software on the IIS server.

- Perform the networking config on the client. Your DB guys can help with this or you can take a look at this:
http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/8i/ ... tion8i.php

- Create a DSN on the IIS server which points to the database server.

- Start using the connection.

This article has some example code in the "Test It" section that connect fro ASP to 8i:

Tim

Thanks for all the info. (I knew it!!) I think the app devels said that only Oracle's Form builder and App Server would work...because no one around here knows!!

I will read all the links you posted. Appreciate your help.
