New Article – Partitioning an Existing Table

In a recent forum thread someone asked me to outline a method for Partitioning an Existing Table using the DBMS_REDEFINITION package. I figured this might be useful to other people so I wrote it up as an article.

I always approach partitioning with caution. Both the article and the forum thread warn against partitioning for the sake of it.

Cheers

  1. Hi all,

I need to know if it is possible to create partitions on an already existing table
    without recreating the table.

If there is a way can you please tell me how thats done.

    Thanks
    Bennet

  2. Hi.

Off the top of my head, your option are to either recreate the table, as in the article, or to do a switch partition, so you make the existing table a partition of a new table. In the second option, your table will end up having a different name, so you still have some issues.

    Cheers
