TNS-12157 TNS:internal network communication error

It’s getting difficult and a little depressing trying to make a blog comment or forum post these days. It seems every time you do you risk offending someone.

Tag me stupid, baby! seemed more than a little relevant.

The comments associated with some high-profile blogs only serve to depress me more. It’s like the pedants and PC freaks have come out in force lately. I don’t know what the answer is and I’m sure, like everyone else, I am part of the problem, but I think everyone should take a step back from the keyboard and chill out!

I’m not sure how I’m going to approach my next posts as my enthusiasm has died a little due to all this.

Remember, this post is not about you, it’s not a criticism of you and if you take it that way you are merely proving my point.

Cheers

  1. Tim,
I think the problem is that it’s hard to gauge someone’s intent when you can’t see them. I am always afraid of offending someone inadvertently simply by the way I phrased something (as you probably already know ;-D). Additionally, there are those folks out there (you KNOW who you are ;-D) who are simply masters of the double entendre (sp?). You look at what they wrote and immediately see 2 different meanings – but which one did they REALLY mean? There’s also the speed factor – it takes about .25 seconds to hit the enter key – but you can agonize over what got sent for a loooong time. A little forethought goes a long way. Now if I could just practice what I preach…..

    😀

  2. I know what you’re saying. If I know I’m in a bad mood I make sure I reread messages before sending them, making sure to remove some of the venom. My real problem is when I’m in a good mood I make flippant comments without thinking (I do this in conversation also), but on the forums they come back to haunt me.

    Such is life 🙂

  4. Tim,

Take it as a compliment 😉

In my opinion you’re one the most composed geeks on the web than others. I know one can feel a bit bogged down.

you have a good site going, your articles have meat and I truly appreciate the work that you put in is praiseworthy.

    Keep up the good work!

    Cheers

  5. I see that your blog entry has spawn an entry on HJR’s blog. I am assuming that your entry itself is spawned from Ton’s entry.

That’s the problem with written communication, isn’t it? It is only one facet of the whole communication thing and unless you are face-to-face, it is almost impossible to tell whether your audience would be offended. Look at what happen with some bloggers where they are so worried about possible litigation that the opportunity for others to provide comments/clarifications are no longer accepted.

I would encourage you to not worry too much about it otherwise you ended doing stuff not for yourself but to applease others.
