300…

I went to see 300 at the cinema last night. There are lots of good things about the film, but when you sum it all up my overall opinion was it was a bit lame.

  • The visuals are very stylised, like Sin City, which at times makes for very iconic scenes, but most of the time leaves you wondering why the whole film looks like a sepia photograph.
  • The dialog is a little predictable, and delivered in a rather over the top way. I guess a lot of this was due to direction, rather than bad acting, but the final result is the same.
  • The spartan soldiers looked like they had just come off the set of a Calvin Klein advert. More homo-erotic than fearsome fighting machines.

Overall, it seemed like a mix of Lord of the Rings, Troy, Sin City and Calvin Klein. Not exactly a winning combination in my book.

There were six of us at the cinema, and two fell asleep. Kind-of says it all.

Cheers

PS. The trailer looks great! 🙂

  1. Hey Tim,
Haven’t seen the movie yet but it’s seems to be doing very well at the box office over here (over a $100m in tickets already). I have read the comics which were very well done (as expected from Frank Miller).

I will probably wait for it to come out on DVD which seems to happen way quicker nowadays.

    Cheers,
    Peter.

  2. It might be like “Lord of the Rings – The Two Towers” was for me. I was bored by it at the cinema, but liked watching it later on DVD, when all the hype had died down. Maybe I’ll grow to like 300 also…

    Cheers

  3. Tim,

I’ve not seen the film. From the trailers I’ve seen it seems to be a gorefest.

Have you seen the file The 300 Spartans starring Richard Egan?
If so, was the newer version an improvement or is the older film the better one?

  4. Funny thing is, I saw about 10 minutes of the old film at the weekend and I kind of liked it. Obviously, it’s very dated, but at least it looks bright. I’ve not seen the whole of the old film, so I’m not in a position to compare properly.

As far as the gorefest is concerned, I guess it it, but it doesn’t look so bad because it’s all in that sepia colour, so the blood doesn’t look like ketchup. 🙂

    Cheers

  5. 300 looks like a sepia photograph because it is based as closely on the graphic novel by ‘300’
as possible. If you see the original frames (each was a double page spread) you’ll see how
closely it has been replicated in the movie. Truly an astonishing feat.

Some blood splatter was even scanned from the comic to be put in the movie to maintain
how closely they resembled each other. This is why the actors are dressed the way they are.

As for the dialoge, that too is almost word for word from the comic. If you wanted to see a
movie that was realistic, and not overtly macho, you should have been able to tell from the previews that this
wasn’t for you. If you couldn’t, well, I’d avoid flames and sharp objects because you’re not
    too bright.

  6. Hi.

Thanks for your opinion. I don’t read comics, so I’m not in a position to make a comparison, but just because the film resembles it, doesn’t make the film good. I’m simply expressing an opinion. If you don’t like it, you’re more than welcome not to read it.

    Cheers
