Theft and revenge…

I was checking through my web stats and I noticed a site sponging my images. It turned out this individual had nicked an article and was just linking to the images on my server. Due to a slight evil streak I decided to take revenge and rename the directory holding the images and replace it with some alternate images. Check it out:

I know it’s wrong, but it feels so right… 🙂

Cheers

  1. Hi Tim,

It’s a fact. Some communist countries are offended by copyright law, and they have no problem stealing. There is a old saying in the publishing world “You only sell one book to China”.

  2. Sure Don. Stealing is typical for communist countries. There is an old saying: “The mosquito weighs 99 kilos on his own scale”

  3. Hi Tim,

A better three pronged solution would be to go to google images search and find the biggest image stored on chinaunix.net (there is one at least 487K) and redirect your URL’s to that using mod rewrite, that was they will host the bandwidth – which is what they are trying to avoid.

Second report him to the ISP, its in hong kong.

Third and better this site has 303,000 backlinks in google and over 3000 via the link command and they ranked 3168 in alexa. They are getting these rankings and therefore traffic (and ad revenew?) from in part other peoples work like yours. report the page to google abuse and also to alexa abuse.

    cheers

It could be worse: You could have put some photos of Tiananmen Square with students in front of the tanks…

    Cheers.

    Carlos.

  5. Just like the Mastercard advert would say….

“getting revenge on someone who steals your intellectualy property…absolutely priceless.”

    Good job Tim.

You probably should do that. Then you would be sticking it to a man and the man simultaneously! ; )

  7. Wow, you guys are really mean. I’m not going to spark an international incident because of one crappy article. 🙂

    Cheers

  8. Twittervision has an api, random non-sequitors in a stolen page would be highly entertaining.

I liked the old “updating computer” bogus messages myself.

  9. Tim,
I truly sympathize with you and applaud you for getting a little revenge on the moron but I think that by providing the link, you are helping to drive traffic to his site. 😉 A screenshot posted on your site will serve the same purpose w/o driving folks to his site.

There are so many ways of getting back at the guy (some of which has been suggested by others) but maybe an email to this moron suggesting that he should not be stealing but rather provide a link to your article would be the best thing to do assuming that you haven’t already done so and gotten no response to the suggestion.

If you really want to get mean, refer those images to something totally unsuitable for work. 😉

  10. Tim, good one. Nothing wrong in doing that.

DB: I think there’s plenty of Americans who steal copyrighted material as well without thinking twice. Then there’s plenty of corporations who have the copyright law changed so they can hold onto “Steamboat Willie” ad infinitum.

ROLF…just too good…beautiful…awesome…& he didnt even bother to change the name at the end. As they say that not “copying” but “smartly copying” works 😉
