When I was cool…

When I was in Bulgaria I was talking to Mark Rittman, who used to be a club DJ, and he was talking about how he used to be cool and now he’s a computer geek and a dad…

I was recently contacted by a friend from University who I’d not seen for nearly 20 years. That prompted me to have a look through some old photos where I found a photo of a band I was in called CopperTongue. Del’s (right) haircut was my doing. πŸ™‚

I also found a photo of some of my gear. I am a computer geek, but I wasn’t always so nerdy. Or maybe I was just a closet geek playing at being cool. πŸ™‚

Cheers

  1. Hi Tim,

Was this band in Birmingham around and about 1991-1995?

I only ask because I recognise the Del bloke. I don’t think it was his real name – I’ve recollections of him driving a yellow three wheeler hence the name.

Is this the same bloke, or am I off the mark?

    Best Regards,

    Mathew Butler

  2. Hi.

His name was Alan Carter. You’re almost right. He was called Del because he drove a maroonish Reliant Robin van. It was our “tour bus”. πŸ™‚

After CopperTongue split up he formed a band called Mink, which later changed its name to Theory of Everthing. I don’t know what he’s doing now.

What band were you in? Maybe I saw you play.

    Cheers

  3. Yep – that’s the fella. I used to see Del around Brum quite a bit through mutual friends.

The last I heard was that the Theory of Everything got a record deal.

I was never in a band. I studied at Brum Uni – one of my house mates was in a band called The Last Picture Show that played at Hibernian and other small venues around Selly Oak.

Where did you study? In Brum?

    Mat.

  4. Yeah. I did a degree and PhD at brum. I was a little older than the other guys. I was just finishing my PhD when they were finishing their degrees.

    Cheers

  5. It sounds like there are high odds that we know some of the same people from the early nineties, may even have been at some of the same gigs.

All the best, and good night!

  6. Tim,

In the old photos- you do look like one of the members of Duran Duran or Erasure- very cool! I play bass guitar and need to get back into music, it is a LOT of fun! Now you are the Oracle PL/SQL Professor πŸ™‚
