I issued the tee command but got the following permissions error:
[oracle@localhost ~]$ rman | tee /u01/bkup/rman/script_logs/rman.log
tee: /u01/bkup/rman/script_logs/rmanlog.log: Permission denied
Recovery Manager: Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production on Fri Jul 26 01:55:52 2013

Now what permissions do i need to give?
I got the solution to the problem after my friend sighted that the ownership might be the problem. After changing it from 'root' to the 'oracle' user for the directory selected for storing backups, the problem was solved.
