I would prefer to use something like
curl -I http://localhost:8090 >/dev/null && return 0 || return 1
It allows you to get HTTP from Tomcat.
it is a line copied from bash function, port may differ and return clause is not allowed in simple command as well.
I just added a basic curl test. Thanks for the feedback. :)

It's really for my benefit. We have a few multi-instance Tomcats, where the CATALINA_HOME and CATALINA_BASE are separated.
