Is there a difference between resetting a parameter and explicitly setting a parameter to its default value?

Hi.

When you set a value, that value is stored in the SPFILE. When to reset a parameter, the entry is removed from the SPFILE. If the defaults change with a patch or upgrade, the reset will give you the new default value. The explicit set will not.

Cheers
