Fedora 29 (F29) Installation

This article provides a pictorial guide for performing a basic installation of Fedora 29 (F29).

Basic Installation

  1. Boot from the DVD. Use the up arrow to pick the "Start Fedora-WorkStation-Live 29" option and hit the return key.


  2. Click the "Install to Hard Drive" option.

  3. Select the appropriate language, then click the "Continue" button.


  4. You are presented with the "Installation Summary" screen. You must complete any marked items before you can continue with the installation. Depending on your requirements, you may also want to alter the default settings by clicking on the relevant links.

    Click the "Installation Destination" link.

  5. If you are happy to use automatic partitioning of the whole disk, click the "Done" button to return to the previous screen.

    If you want to modify the partitioning configuration, select the "Custom" option and click the "Done" button to work through the partitioning screens.

  6. Once you have completed your alterations to the default configuration, click the "Begin Installation" button.

  7. Wait for the installation to complete. When prompted, click the "Quit" button, then reboot the Live DVD session.


  8. Click the "Next" button.


  9. Select the security options and click the "Next" button.


  10. Click the "Skip" button.

  11. Enter the user details and click the "Next" button.


  12. Enter the password and click the "Next" button.


  13. Click the "Start Using Fedora" button.

  14. You are logged in directly and presented with the "Getting Started" screen. Reboot to use the hard drive installation, rather than the live CD.

  15. After a reboot you will be presented with the normal login screen, where use can click the user name to log in as.

  16. Enter the password and click the "Sign In" button.

  17. You are now presented with the console screen.


  18. If chose to do a minimal installation and you now want a GUI desktop, log in and issue the following commands from the console to install the desktop packages and reboot.

    # dnf update -y
    # dnf groupinstall "MATE Desktop" -y
    # dnf install gdm -y
    # systemctl enable gdm 
    # systemctl set-default graphical.target
    # reboot

Network Configuration

The specific instructions will vary a little, depending on the window manager you have installed.
