Mark all as read…

You may have noticed I’ve not written much recently. There are lots of things going on at the moment, none of which are really conducive to sitting down and writing about Oracle.

Anyway, today I’ve decided to clear my backlog of emails and blog posts. The emails were tough, but the “Mark all as read” button on Google Reader made catching up on my reading list really easy. I feel a bit guilty about blanking a few hundred blog posts, but that’s life. 🙂

Typing is a bit difficult at the moment because I have a trapped nerve in my neck, which is affecting my left hand, so lots of letters are getting missed as I type, which hopefully I’ve noticed before I hit the publish button. 🙂

Missing UKOUG…

I’m a bit hacked off because I’m missing out on UKOUG…

I got a free pass to check out the conference this year and I can’t go because I’ve got a cold. I spent the whole of yesterday in bed and I think I’m going back there now. I’m bored out of my brain, but every time I try to do anything other than sleep I feel really dodgy and my joints hurt.

It’s my nephews birthday tomorrow. If I miss that I’m going to be in all sorts of trouble, but it’s not looking good at the moment…

I’m off to Sweden next week for a conference over there. I hope I’m feeling better by then!

More Frankfurt News…

I was told about 23:00 last night I would be on a flight at 9:45 this morning. I’ve been standing in a queue for an hour to be told I’m not on the flight. I’m currently 2nd on the standby list for a flight that has been overbooked by about 50 people. I really don’t think I’m getting out of here today…

I’m struggling to keep calm…

PS. Mom. Please don’t phone or text me to ask me how I am. You will not like the reply.

Case Sensitive Passwords in 11g…

This article is the last in the “Security: New Features” section of the OCP upgrade exam syllabus, which includes:

Just because these are the only security new features listed in the exam, don’t be fooled into thinking they are the only things you should care about. There are plenty more listed in the Security New Features section of the New Features Guide.

In addition to checking out the manuals, you might want to jump over to Pete Finnigan‘s site to check out some of his 11g security stuff.

Never Back Down…

I went to see Never Back Down on Saturday evening. The trailer looked like an episode of “The O.C.” or “One Tree Hill” with some fighting in, so I was expecting it to be really bad. On looking at the cast list, it turns out some of the cast have appeared in episodes of those shows, I wasn’t too far off the money.

The story is essentially just a remake of the Karate Kid movie, using Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) rather than Karate. Just like the Karate Kid movie, there wasn’t a great deal of martial arts in this film.

If you like vacuous shows like the O.C and On Tree Hill you will probably love this. If you go expecting to see a martial arts film you will be very disappointed. There were a few moments of interest, but for the most part it was well worth missing. 🙂

The trailer for Iron Man looks fantastic. Almost worth the cinema trip to see this trailer. 🙂

SnagIt…

I’ve written before about getting screen shots in Linux, but recently I’ve been doing some screen grabs from Windows. I started using GIMP, which does a reasonable job of capturing and scaling them, then I remembered I used a tool called SnagIt when I was writing my first book. I’ve got a license for version 7, but I didn’t have it with me, so I downloaded the free trial of version 8 and within a couple of minutes I was grabbing like crazy. It allows you to select active frames and automatically scale them to size, so it’s just “grab and save”.

I used SnagIt to get the screen grabs for a RHEL5 installation when I was running a VMware client on Windows. It must have been the quickest set of screen grabs I’ve ever done.

I’ll have to dig out my version 7 license and upgrade it to 8. 🙂

My Knee – A New Hope…

I went for my first physiotherapy session today. So far so good. I’ve had all the tape removed and the scars are hardly noticeable. There is still a bit of swelling, but hardly anything. I’ve been given some heavier exercises to do now. Things like squatting with my back to a wall, slow step-ups on the stairs and balances. Nothing to difficult, but it should improve my proprioception.

I went swimming today for the first time since the operation and I followed it up with a session in the gym. I did all my rehab exercises and some leg presses and stiff legged deadlifts. I’ve got to get more muscle around my knees so I guess I’ll have to fit the gym into my schedule. I think I may have to give up work to fit in all my other stuff… 🙂
