I Am Legend…

Not me personally…

I went to see I Am Legend today. It wasn’t the worst film I’ve ever seen, but I did catch myself thinking it was a really long 1 hour 40 minutes! There were lots of great scenes of a completely deserted New York, but that was about the best of it. I think the most annoying thing about the film is it didn’t really go anywhere. It just sort-of meandered. I still think the trailer looks cool! 🙂

  1. I just thought the film just ended, I mean like in 5 mins, he has foudn another person alive, got the cure and saved humanity?

Did you see that place where the survivors were staying? I am surprised they survived at all?

  2. I really liked the film up until the end. It was wrapped up too tidy. Of course I had a million questions afterward like why didn’t the zombies know where he lived before? Didn’t they watch everything he did which is how they set the trap? Why didn’t the zombies hunt the deer? Why did the electricity still work? Etc…

  3. Hi.

I think I got the answer to some of those things.

    1) He mentioned to the girl about whether the Zombies followed them home. I guess this implies he usually took care not to be followed home, presumably by going home in daylight. He also washed the steps down with water. I assumed this was to wash off his scent.

    2) I guess they did hunt the deer. Maybe the deer ran out of the city centre at night.

    3) They showed some Honda generators in his house at the start. I guess this was his only electricity.

The whole point of I Am Legend is explained here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_Legend). I think the original story was a lot more insightful than the rubbish ending used in the film.

  4. I Am Legend Was Will smiths greatsest Movie. I saw it yesterday and i freaked out in a couple of scenes and cried others all in all it was a great Movie

    LOL:)

  5. I was wondering if they blew up the bridges so no one could leave Manhattan, how did the girl and boy get there and then how did they leave? Manhattan is an island.

  6. Good question. All the other questions and comments seem to be either a matter of opinion or easily answered. But how did she get into Manhattan from maryland where she said she traveled from and then to Vermont? If they blew up all the bridges one would assume all the tunnels were blocked off somehow. Very good observation if you ask me. Does anyone have the answer?

  7. I think that she drove to the other port of the city, and took a boat to Manhattan. I dont think that tunnels were made because that wouldve just been another way that the Dark Seekers could escape. As everyone else, i dont have an actual answer, i just say that this is the best guess.

  8. I do like these sort of films (28 weeks etc) but the infected in ‘I am legend’ just pushed this film to far. The only redeeming feature is will smith 😉

  9. The question is: Who set the trap that caught Will Smith? The Dark Seekers couldn’t have set it – the only tool they seem to be able to use is thier heads (to break things, attack trucks and smash windows, etc). So “who set the trap that Will was snared in” is the big questions because the Dark Seekers don’t know how to use a hammer much less set a snare trap – much less bait it… much less… Aw heck, just go with it I suppose. Who set the damn trap?!?!?!

Of course Will hunts deer, he would crave meat. Remember, how he flipped on the girl? He was saving the bacon he said. The only stuff he took from the appartment he broke into was meat (spam and a can of salmon). Makes sense since all meat would have spoiled quickly (or been ravinously consumed early on by Dark Seekers who also ate the non-infected survirors).

This begs another question -since the Dark Seekers were cannibals, why didn’t they eat each other?

Nope, the only mistake is the trap. I can forgive the cannibalism thing – they’re flocking / hearding / packing… whatever.

Great movie. Can’t wait until the DVD is released. Until then, I’m going to order Omega Man from Netflix.

    Great movie!

  10. ABOUT THE DARK SEEKERS AND THE TRAP. I THINK THEY WERE TRYING TO SUGGEST THAT THEY WERE DEVELOPING SOME SORT OF INTELLIGENCE AND EMOTIONAL CONNECTION AMONGST THEMSELVES , ONE IN PARTICULAR THE MAIN DARK SEEKER. HE SET THE TRAP AFTER WILL CAPTURED THE FEMALE ONE TO DO THE TESTS ON. I THINK HE WANTED HER BACK. I WITH THEY HAD DEVELOPED THAT ANGLE A BIT MORE.

ANOTHER PROBLEM I HAVE WITH THE MOVIE IS THAT THE FLASH BACKS SHOULD HAVE GONE A LITTLE FURTHER, THEY JUST STOP WHEN THE HELICOPTER WHERE HIS FAMILY BLEW UP, THEY SHOULD HAVE SHOWED MORE ON WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM AFTER THAT – IT WAS THREE YEARS PRIOR!!!

AS SOON AS I SAW THERE WAS A DOG I KNOW IT WAS GOING TO DIE, I HATE IT WHEN THAT HAPPENS. HOLLYWOOD MOVIES ARE SO FULL OF SHIT, THEY COULDN’T MAKE THE BLACK GUY DIE BECAUSE HE IS THE MAIN AND ONE OF THE ONLY CHARACTERS SO THEY KILL THE DOG INSTEAD – THAT WAS MY THINKING UNTIL I SAW HE DIED IN THE END OF COURSE!!!

  11. Who cares the dog should of just died without the drama, and will smith is an idiot irobot was his best film and haha to the helicopter that pilot was crap!!!

  12. Entertaining movie but I was disappointed. Not a plausible story. Read All of Yesterdays Tomorrows.

  13. what the hell the dog shouldent have died i allways cry when things like that happen to dog over all i think it was a good film but the dog dying just spoild it and i cried for a long time

  14. p.s f**k off to anyone who says im a pussy coz i cried and to anyone who thinks the dog should have died

  15. I believe the infected set the trap for Smith, however my bf thinks Smith set it and forgot cos he was going crazy? It’s good to watch a film that causes debate. Preferred the alternative ending though!

  16. I almost wasn’t going to comment to this blog until I saw how late the last post was. I thought the movie was okay. They should have been able to deveop the story and characters more completely, since it wasn’t to many characters in this movie to work with. The flashbacks should have been more in depth. I guess they stopped becuase they wanted to build the suspense of what the infected people looked like. Which would have been easy if they used more creativty. They could of used shadows and the shaky camera coming at you too cover that up. Movies do seem to mimic each other with that drawing stuff out to long. I would have been maybe a little more disappointed if I saw this in a movie, but I saw it on bootleg and it was watchable. I do hate when movie makers think every movie goer doesn’t pay attention to detail. Like where the two survivors came from, and who set the trap. They should have showed that leader infected do some other clever things. Also it would have been nice if Will Smith and the leader met earlier in some close call. This move would have been better if they had some more survivors and was able to form bond with each other. Plus that could have made the story have more possibilities. The 3 year gap didn’t help at all.

  17. If you read the Wikipedia post on I Am Legend you will see the original story and film had a lot more story. Not only were there the uninfected and the infected, but there was an additional section of the population that were infected, but retained normal mental function…

This would have added depth to the story.

    Cheers

  18. Hi.
Anna drove over the George..bridge…somethingcause they didn’t destroy that one. You can see that in one of the deleted scenes.
The electricity didn’t work, Robert Neville had generators running on oil. Since the Zombies can’t be out in sunlight, they cannot see where Robert lives. He poors vinegar on all his cloths and everywhere he goes to hide his scent. Ofcourse Dark Seekers hunt the deers, but deers are not dumb. I guess that they hid themselves during nightfall. When Sam runs into the dark, they really does eat the deer. So why shouldn’t they hunt them?

  19. I am legend was a great movie. I didn’t really like the end. But everything else was on point. Will Smith is a very talented man.

  20. Forgive the lateness…but we’ve just seen I am Legend on TV here and as an ex survival teacher, I can make some other (late) observations.
Firstly, Will Smith is supposed to be a Colonel, but he looks a bit too young for that rank. He would never soley rely on a Colt Commando (Ar-15) as he’d have shotgun back up, an extra auto-matic in the car and plenty of phosphurus grenades etc. plus a side weapon holstered.
The dog would have to have been on a leash, as the danger of it running into a dark space would be very real, considering they were chasing deer on a day to day basis.
Being military, he would have also seen to his ‘shelter’ and made sure the roof etc. was all welded up. (as he’d done with the windows)
In just three years, he wouldn’t have gone delusional in setting up shop dummies to look like some scene of normality in a video/dvd shop. Plenty of people stranded in survival situations, with nothing but the odd bird for company, have not gone loopy, but tried to better their condition, building new tools, amenities etc. Being in NY, he would have had lots to do/see everyday and with his work, plenty to occupy his mind, with the belief that he was hellping to rid humanity of a disease. (good fortune he was a scientist too!)
The mannakin being moved was a major flaw in the film and again, being military, he should have know someone had moved it and gone into recce mode. Making his presence well known by shouting, freaking out and firing valuable ammunition into the dummy was terrible film making!
The darkseakers are also supposed to look like nothing more capable than screaming, running and banging their heads into hard things; so why did they suddenley build a trap that most people on the streets today couldn’t manage?
Then Will gets caught in the trap and that knocks him out for a period of time….?! When he wakes, he has the bright idea of cutting the rope without holding on to the other end, resulting in him falling 15 feet to the floor, which again, in any situation is crazy. He could have broken his back, or at the least, one of his limbs.
After that, a quick foolish ride around at night, totally unprepared (without much fire power) to round off the night and nearly getting himself killed…again.
I guess that would be the human race all over : the only survivor is an idiot! (but great scientist)
Apart from that, the tech staff on the movie did a great job and good acting too from the main (only) characters.

  21. Really enjoyed Luke’s comment about the survival angle. Only thing I disagree with was the last bit. I think he really wanted to die after Sam died. Sam was all he had left of his family.

Also, maybe someone here can describe how Neville actually makes the traps. Luke sort of hinted at it when he said most people on the street couldn’t make that trap let alone a psychotic rabid infected guy. I couldn’t piece it together how the trap was made.

  22. The infected set the trap. It was obvious due to the ‘mate’ of the test subject waiting with the dogs to get him. Also Fred was at the shop as it showed earlier, and will obviously couldn’t have moved it as then he wouldn’t freak out… It was all far to well planned out to just be a mistake. Another thing is that at the end when the ‘mate’ is smashing the glass, he knocks two other out the way so he can do it himself, he is obviously in ‘charge’ and has a connection to the test subject.
